Jon Ruben pleaded guilty to 17 criminal counts at the judicial center on Friday

A person who laced sweets with sleeping medication and distributed them to minors at a youth camp in the region has pleaded guilty to sexual offences against two boys aged between nine and ten.

The defendant was arrested after eight minors and an older person experienced illness at the location in July.

The 76-year-old, from that region, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

However, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was involving a nine-year-old boy.

Ruben was held in detention ahead of a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, presenting evidence, detailed the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She explained his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a summer camp which he operated.

Ruben conducted a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel said, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and request they to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge the defendant had engaged in this activity with the children "over an extended period", and minors had previously become sick the following morning.

She explained the defendant had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had concerns in recently.

The prosecutor added: "This year his family member had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They resolved" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The prosecutor explained items including lubricant, Vaseline and injection devices were found, and his stepchild alerted the police about his worries.

She explained the defendant went on to play the "candy game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Law enforcement" had not responded by that stage," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the situation.

The prosecutor stated the children were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so the family member called the authorities once more.

She said the man then engaged in the "sweet game" in a area of five minors.
