Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
