Our Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Number One Place.

Initially, this work could seem more like an arduous university examination than the latest popular music record from an artist who just had a last hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Divided into 4 different parts and performed in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged opus exploring female mystique, religious transcendence, and physical change, frequently via the perspective of different saintly figures. The end of a romance—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—is launched skyward here, carried by the constant presence of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure daring by itself makes the efforts of contemporary artists seem quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in transcend overly academic posturing feels almost a miracle, and complete praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to blend the past with modern styles, the stakes are far higher here, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is an essential spirit of joy. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you into its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines clearly on the stirring Italian ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four moments. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration before a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in like cartoonish force. The track immediately segues to the wild single featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from none other than herself.

"The magic with this album is that you never exactly understand—nor wish to predict—where you will go next."

Almost each song concludes at a totally different point from how it began. One moment explores the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous trap-infused style starts off dark and brooding, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic choir enter to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key balancing act on the album is straddling the line between bold innovation and broad appeal. It is no surprise that it has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in English swells around a refrain that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks while it spins upward. That trick gets repeated by another expansive ballad that expands and constricts, weaving multiple melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album is popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of hidden gems that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While some major releases of the year seemed like feasting on meal, Lux is a sumptuous banquet where the characters around the table, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit from conversations about historical saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
