Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
