Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
